How To Make Money Travel Blogging

There are different ways to monetize a travel blog, which I will cover in this article. When I started blogging some of these income streams didn’t exist, so if you’re just starting out it’s easier to make money blogging now than it used to be.

How To Make Money From A Travel Blog Using Affiliate Links

Here are some ways that travel bloggers make money, from display advertising and affiliate marketing to brand partnerships and e-courses. It’s best not to limit yourself to just one currency but you also don’t want to spread yourself too thin and try to do everything at once. Choose a few investment options and focus on success.

When I started blogging Google Adsense was the only good option for doing travel blogging and display advertising. Unfortunately, since Adsense uses a pay-per-click model, it is difficult to make a lot of money with Google Adsense, even with thousands of page views.

Today though there are many options. Many bloggers start with a media network like Ezoic, then they switch to Mediavine when they get about 50,000 sessions per month on their blog. If you’re interested, I’ve written a full review of Mediavine here.

Mediavine offers some of the highest RPM (revenue per mille) in the industry, so you can expect to earn around $15.25 per thousand sessions on your website. So if your website has good traffic – say 100,000 times – you can expect to earn about $1525 per month just from Mediavine alone.

This income is passive and is sent as a direct deposit to your bank account at the end of each month. Display advertising requires little effort as everything is managed, so it is the easiest way to get a travel blog.

The hardest part is building enough traffic to get support for Mediavine. You should write long, detailed and regular messages.

Another great ad network is AdThrive. Usually people switch to AdThrive when they reach the minimum input requirement of 100,000 sessions on their blog.

Affiliate marketing involves adding affiliate links to sponsored companies within your blog. When a user clicks on a link and buys something from that company, you are making a sale.

Many bloggers get involved in affiliate marketing, realizing that it is time consuming and not put to good use. But affiliate marketing can earn you thousands of dollars in free cash while you earn money while you sleep!

The key is to choose a few brands that you know and can support yourself. I use Booking.com to book hotels so I provide affiliate links to hotels on this site. I added a map widget so people can see a map of the hotel in my post.

Other booking sites you can link to include Kayak, TripAdvisor, Citypass, Hostelworld and Viator. All of these companies run affiliate programs that you can sign up for.

Apart from travel sites you can also write articles about blogging and add links to hosting providers, VPNs and keyword tools like Keysearch. I recommend companies like Canva to create beautiful Pinterest graphics.

It always helps if you use the product yourself because your link will look real. If the brand name sticks out like a sore thumb then it will immediately turn off your audience. So stick to companies you know and love.

Dedicated reviews are also a great way to implement affiliate marketing. You can write a hotel review with a link to the hotel booking page, or write a review about a travel insurance company and add a link to sign up. When a visitor reads a review it means that they are looking for the company and wondering whether to buy. Your review will give them another chance!

Another way bloggers make money is by selling endorsements. A travel company or brand will pay a blogger a one-time fee to write an article and include the company’s name in the text. Brands get promoted and linked to their website.

Sponsorship articles come in many forms. You may be asked to write a dedicated review of a travel product, such as a bag, backpack or travel credit card. Or you may be asked to write one thing about the goal and add a little word about the company in the post.

Prices for sponsored posts vary depending on your blog metrics like DA and traffic. I would say that most bloggers pay in the range of $60-$300 per recommended post.

If you have a great blog though with lots of traffic you can pay the $500+ mark for a sponsored post. Obviously you’ll want to adjust your speed depending on how busy you are at creating the post.

Personally, I think that if you are starting out as a new blogger, you should focus your blog on SEO and not so much on social media. But if you develop a good social media following, you can also use things like sponsored Instagram posts, stories, TikTok videos, tweets or Facebook posts.

For example, Christine of Tour de Lust creates a lot of fun entertainment and often works with brands and paid partnerships. To stand out on Instagram and increase your following, you need to create a mix of interesting content, including short videos and beautiful images.

Sometimes tourism boards will reach out to travel bloggers to promote their destination. You may be invited on a sponsored trip where the tour operator pays for your travel, hotel and expenses.

In the past tourism boards / PR agencies usually didn’t pay bloggers to travel to their destinations – they just covered expenses. Today though it’s a different story if you get good blog traffic then you can get paid for the coverage you create.

In this case, you will have a discussion with the tour board about how much content you want to produce during/after the tour. You will probably be asked for a combination of blog, social media and video content if you are popular on YouTube.

Once you’ve agreed on what you’ll get and negotiated a fee, you’ll go into a travel agency or PR agency. When it comes to payment, you can pay per day for your time on the trip but it is best to pay a flat rate for each item so the customer knows exactly what they are paying for. For example, if you commit to providing 2 blogs, 6 Instagram posts, 20 articles and one YouTube video, you will provide a fixed amount for each of these.

How To Start A Travel Blog And Make Money Step By Step

When I started blogging, I just wanted to use the blog as a portfolio to showcase my writing. I hope to get a travel writing job in Lonely Planet or Matador or some daily newspaper. Little did I know that my blog would become my main business.

For more money, though, you can reach the book and submit a proposal for an article or blog post on their site. Some companies may hire you to be a regular contributor or blogger for them.

Many bloggers go the route of creating their own e-courses or ebooks. For example, Nomadic Matt has written several books, including “How to Travel the World on $50 a Day” and “The Ultimate Guide to Travel Hacking”. He also started his own blogging school called Superstar Blogging and is one of the highest paid travel bloggers.

You can write an ebook on how to become a successful blogger or how to take better photos. Or, you can write directions to a specific city or location. Once you’ve written it, you can sell it on Amazon or choose to sell it directly on your website as a digital download. The key is to expand on topics you are familiar with and provide more detailed information that cannot be found on your blog.

A popular way to monetize blogging these days is by selling Lightroom Presets. Take The Blonde Abroad for example. It sells a collection of Lightroom Presets that you can use to make your photos pop.

You can also sell other products on your site, such as bags or your own clothing line. For example, The Travel Hack designed his own suitcase using the Cabin Max suitcase.

Some new bloggers start out by working as virtual assistants for established bloggers. If you
